Carbs Explained
No carbs? Better to know your carbs instead.
A high carbohydrate diet or a low carbohydrate diet? You've probably heard arguments for and against them both depending on the latest diet trend. The truth is simple – carbs don't have to be a bad thing. You just have to know which carbs to eat.
Avoid: Simple sugars and refined carbohydrates. While the refining process makes a product that is visually appealing, it also deprives the food of its nutritional value. These refined products sometimes claim to be 'enriched' or 'fortified', but this does not necessarily make them nutritious. Removing all the vitamins and minerals during the refining process and then adding them back in is not as good as eating the carbohydrate the way nature intended.
Embrace: Whole grain or whole wheat products. But remember to always check how much sugar is on the label!
If weight loss through a healthy diet is your goal, cut back on sugar and avoid refined carbohydrates and white flour products like white bread, pasta or cakes.
