Don’t fear fat

Health conscious doesn’t mean non-fat or fat-free. Fat performs many important functions in the body. It provides the largest store of potential energy in the body, protects internal organs, and provides insulation from the cold. One gram of fat equals 9 calories which is more than twice the calories in an equal amount of carbohydrate and protein. Fat provides the body with a valuable energy source and serves as a carrier for fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). Deficiencies in dietary fat may lead to a vitamin deficiency.

The main types of fat are Saturated, Unsaturated and Trans Fats. Saturated fat is often known as the “bad fat” as it affects the bad cholesterol (LDL). Usually solid at room temperature LDL can be found in animal products and diary products. Often know as the “good fat”, unsaturated fats are usually liquid at room temperature and affect the good cholesterol (HDL). Unsaturated fat comes from vegetable sources like olive and canola oil. Trans fats may potentially be the worst kind of fat. When manufacturing fat products an unsaturated fat is partially hydrogenated, increasing the bad cholesterol (LDL) while also decreasing the good cholesterol (HDL). It is the ratio between these that can have a big risk for coronary heart disease.

So try not to avoid fat - just try to limit saturated fats and stay clear of trans fats while enjoying some good fats in your diet.
